Via Ferrata Rio Sallagoni

  • Time: 6 hours
  • Costs: free

Suggestive and exciting via ferrata inside a small canyon in the rock below Castel Drena: it is easy and suitable for starting but not recommended for children under 1.40 meters.
Even the via ferrata experts will find satisfaction from the suggestive landscape of the canyon.

From Arco follow the big road towards Dro. Going up from Dro towards Drena, after 2 hairpin bends you will find a tambourine playground on your right: park and walk in the olive grove. Follow the dirt road that goes right down to the south until the signs indicating the beginning of the via ferrata.

The via ferrata starts on the left between two high rock walls. In the first part the via ferrata is horizontal and there are slightly overhanging sections.
After this first part you are in a wide open area full of vegetation and with a waterfall. Keeping the left, cross the Tibetan bridge that returns to the right. The path continues to the right with a series of iron steps and cables that are very easy to overcome. After about 10 minutes, you cross the stream to climb a new equipped stretch of medium difficulty. Watch out for this slippery stretch from the wet rock. You are in front of another Tibetan bridge, shorter than the first.

At this point you can exit to the left by crossing a wooden bridge or continue to the right.
From this point on, the approach changes. From the via ferrata we move on to a sort of facilitated canyoning where, following the stream bed above the water level, we jump from one boulder to another with the help of metal brackets in the most difficult points.

The itinerary ends when the stream bed begins to widen, where in some places it is less than three meters. You then exit to the left passing a short ramp. You will pass through wonderful views in a truly suggestive environment and once the ferrata is over it is worth a visit to Castel Drena.

From here you go down the provincial road until you return to the parking lot. Going down there are some cuts on the path that make you jump a few bends.
The most demanding part is at the beginning on the overhanging stretches. If you find it too tiring you have a way out shortly after the start

The first Tibetan bridge is about 20 meters long, if you don’t want to do it you can avoid it by keeping to the right

In the second section you are always at water level, bring a dry change with you (I always bathe my feet)

If you are alone and want to join, if you prefer to ride with a local guide or if you are a beginner you can do the via ferrata of Castel Drena with an alpine guide: ask at the reception and we will contact you the right person for you! The via ferrata is for all the seasons, in the absence of snow or ice.
